Tillage

Tillage is the agricultural preparation of soil by mechanical agitation of various types, such as digging, stirring, and overturning. Examples of human-powered tilling methods using hand tools include shoveling, picking, mattock work, hoeing, and raking. Examples of draft-animal-powered or mechanized work include ploughing (overturning with moldboards or chiseling with chisel shanks), rototilling, rolling with cultipackers or other rollers, harrowing, and cultivating with cultivator shanks (teeth).

Tillage that is deeper and more thorough is classified as primary, and tillage that is shallower and sometimes more selective of location is secondary. Primary tillage such as ploughing tends to produce a rough surface finish, whereas secondary tillage tends to produce a smoother surface finish, such as that required to make a good seedbed for many crops. Harrowing and rototilling often combine primary and secondary tillage into one operation.

"Tillage" can also mean the land that is tilled. The word "cultivation" has several senses that overlap substantially with those of "tillage". In a general context, both can refer to agriculture. Within agriculture, both can refer to any kind of soil agitation. Additionally, "cultivation" or "cultivating" may refer to an even narrower sense of shallow, selective secondary tillage of row crop fields that kills weeds while sparing the crop plants.

Exemples du corpus de texte pour TILLAGE
1. There are some possibilities for increasing soil carbon storage, such as encouraging farmers to adopt modern practices that minimize the tillage needed to plant crops.
2. Among the environmental benefits of biotechnology cited by Benson were reduced levels of pesticides, reduced tillage, less soil erosion and less water runoff of herbicides and pesticides into streams and the water supply.
3. For instance, a practice called conservation tillage, in which farmers try to plant crops with minimal disturbance of the soil, was supposed to deliver an 18 percent reduction in nitrogen pollution.
4. "This access to quality hybrid maize seed complements very well our fertilizer subsidy program. Improved seeds, like hybrids and irrigation development, have shown for many decades to have greater yield potential, and this is a critical element of our plan to achieve food self–sufficiency in Malawi". Antonio Valencia of Sasakawa Global 2000, which is involved in the promotion of conservation tillage in Malawi, said: "By enabling the local farmers to benefit from hybrid seed, Monsanto is helping the government of Malawi stop the cycle of poverty. Those farmers following the conservation tillage method with this seed will not require food aid nor inputs from government next year." With conservation tillage, crops are grown with minimal cultivation of the soil, leaving a large percentage of the soil covered by crop residues, thus protecting the soil from erosion.
5. Mugabe defensive Mugabe, 81, defended his controversial Land Reform programme – which has seen more than 5000 white farmers thrown off their land – as not only "an empowerment programme ... redressing past gross imbalances in land ownership, which were institutionalised by British colonialism, but is also the provision of a wealth–creating resource". Robert Mugabe: Land reform redresses past imbalances "As a result of our Land Reform Programme, my government has been allocating substantial budgetary resources to agriculture, directed at the provision of crop and input support, tillage, mechanisation and dam construction." Mugabe added that agriculture subsidies in developed countries "has had a crippling effect on the development of agriculture in developing countries". Hunger is political Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said hunger was a political problem of "gargantuan proportions", and criticised developed nations for their lack of commitment to solve it.
